Rites Held Here for Sgt. J. Joey Carlton
Staff Sgt. John Joey Carlton, 30, who was stationed at Dyess Air Force Base, was killed Jan. 16 in a motor vehicle accident in Italy. He was on temporary assignment overseas.
Services were at 2 P.M. Tuesday at Christ Funeral Home, directed by Stanford Funeral Home. The Rev. Rich Hahn, pastor, officiated.
Military graveside services were at Highland Memorial Cemetery, directed by personnel from Dyess Air Force Base.
Born March, 12, 1953, in Hamlin, he lived in the Tuxedo community before moving to Stamford in 1960. He graduated from Stamford High School in 1971. He attended Texas Western College in Snyder, and married Diane Damian, May 23, 1974, in Abilene.
He joined the Air Force in 1975 and had served at March Air Force Base in California; at Sembach, Germany; and at Dyess Air Force Base. He was stationed at Dyess until leaving in October 1983 for Comisco, Italy, for a year's remote tour. He was stationed with the 487th Combat Support Group at a newly constructed missile base at the time of his death.
A member of Grace Lutheran Church, he also was a member of the Sons of Hermann Lodge No. 228 of Old Glory.
His paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Carlton, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Dianne of Dyess Air Force Base; a son, Jonathan Michael of the home; two daughters, Michelle and Tammy, both of the home; his parents, John E. "Chub" and Wendy Carlton of Lake Stamford; his father in law, and mother in law, Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Damian of Abilene; and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John F. Wendeborh of Sagerton.
Pallbearers were John Wendeborn, Bob Carpenter, Ken Matthews, John Anthony Damian, Mike Pueschel, and Burney Herman.
Honorary pallbearers were First Lt. Ted. D. Connally, Mark Green, Roger Galloway, Bobby Prichard, Ronnie Denson, Randy Denson, Tommie Spitzer, and Louis Lyckman.
