He was born May 8, 1921, in Leominster, the son of Hugh and Harriet V. (Brown) Foster, and had lived here most of his life. He graduated from Leominster High School in 1939.
Mr. Foster worked at the former Merchants National Bank for 42 years, retiring as a vice president some years ago.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving on the USS Devosa in the South Pacific. Among the decorations he received were the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, the American Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal.
Mr. Foster was a member of St. Leo's Church, where he served as a deacon -- ordained on April 28, 1990 -- until his retirement in 1996. He was also a member and past exalted ruler of Leominster Lodge of Elks 1237. He was also a member of Leominster Rotary and had served as an "executive on loan" to the former Leominster United Fund. In addition, he served as treasurer of the local chapter of the March of Dimes for many years and was a former director of the Visiting Nurses Association.
He leaves his wife, Grace F. (Lovrien) Foster, whom he married on Feb. 14, 1944, in Bethesda (Md.) Naval Hospital Chapel. He also leaves two sons, Glenn R. Foster of Leominster and Stephen H. Foster of Friendswood, Texas; a daughter, Mary Ellen Foster of Washington, N.J.; and six grandchildren.
A son, Paul A. Foster, died April 6, 1999, in an automobile accident in Los Angeles.
He was also predeceased by a brother, Bentley A. Foster, in July 1989, and two sisters, Helen I. Starzynski, in April 1989, and Rachel Gantt, in May 1995.
A memorial Mass will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Leo's Church, 128 Main St.
Private burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery .
