John Thomas Butler was born to William Butler and Mahala Mears on April 6, 1861 in Louisiana.

John's mother had moved from Mississippi to Louisiana with her father and siblings prior to 1860. There in Claiborne, Ouachita Parish, Louisiana she married on June 21,1860 to William Butler, who died when his son, John Thomas Butler, was less than two years old. Before 1870 John's mother had remarried to an older gentleman, Currin Anderson, who had several children from a prior marriage, and the family relocated to Center, Sebastian, Arkansas. John is shown as age 10 in their home in that August 1870 census.

In the 1870 census for Mahala (Mears, Butler) Anderson, she informed the census taker that her firstborn son, John Thomas Butler, was born in Louisiana, to which state Mahala's father had moved his family after losing his wife in Mississippi. Some later censuses erroneously record John's birthplace as Mississippi, actually his parents' birthplace.

John Thomas Butler married Emma Frances Howard on December 22, 1882 in Sebastian County, Arkansas, where they had a large family and lived out their lives.
