Susan H. Smith was a daughter of Robert W. Smith, a farmer and slaveholder, born December 25, 1796, in South Carolina, died by accident, August 16, 1861, in Clark County, Kentucky, son of William Smith and Lucy Wright. On June 9, 1842, in Clark County, Kentucky, Robert married Frances "Fannie" Lavinia Hickman, born October 24, 1817, in Kentucky, died November 24, 1866, buried in Winchester Cemetery, Winchester, Clark County, Kentucky, a daughter of William L. Hickman and Sarah "Sallie" Pearson.

Susan was living in Clark County, Kentucky, at the time of the 1870 census. In 1880, she was living in Dallas, Texas, with her husband, Lee Bullard, and their only child, Leelia. The 1900 census shows Susan widowed, working as a matron at Thornwell Orphanage in Clinton, South Carolina. In 1920, she was living with her daughter at a boarding house in Washington, D. C.

Lee Bullard, Susan's husband, was born December 24, 1838, in Virginia, and died July 7, 1885, in Dallas, Texas. He fought for the Confederacy as a private in Company C, 30th Virginia Infantry, and later as a private in Company E, 9th Virginia Cavalry. His father, Charles Benson Bullard, a farmer, was born September 29, 1815, in Virginia, a son of Charles Bullard and Martha Herndon. On March 22, 1838, in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, Charles married Sarah Ann Chancellor, born July 7, 1819, in Chancellorsville, Spotsylvania County, Virginia, and died August 14, 1915, in Washington, D. C., a daughter of John Chancellor and Mary Crutcher Gatewood.

Lee's sister, Anna B. "Nan" Bullard, was born Dec. 13, 1857, in Virginia, and died in 1932. She married Harry R. Warren, born 1868 in Maryland, died 1919. They are also buried in Glenwood Cemetery.
