Dr. Howard B. Anderson

Dr. Howard B. Anderson, 87, of South Bend Township, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, in Indiana Regional Medical Center, Indiana, Pa. He was born Jan. 15, 1922, in Vandergrift, the son of Carl and Ida (Swank) Anderson. Dr Anderson lived a number of places during his career. He was a graduate of Vandergrift High School Class of 1940. He received a bachelor's degree in teaching at the Western Washington University, a masters degree in supervisor's and administration from Columbia University. A doctor of education degree Pennsylvania State University, Dr. Anderson's Teaching Career of 45 years was in the public schools of Washington State and in California. He taught at the campus school of the State of New York at Potsdam and college classes at Towson State Teachers College in Maryland and at Long Beach State University in California. After retiring, he returned to South Bend Township and did substitute teaching in the Kiski Area School District. Dr. Anderson was a Navy Veteran of World War II, he served in the Armed Guard as a radio operator aboard merchant vessels delivering war material and troops to the European Theater. He was a member of First Reformed Church of the United Church of Christ in Vandergrift. He served on the consistory as deacon and elder for 22 years and was awarded the honor of elder emeritus in 1999 when the church celebrated its 100th anniversary. He was a member of Phi Delta, National Education Association and the AARP. Dr. Anderson did extensive traveling to many counties of the world. He enjoyed gardening, reading and writing. Survivors include two sisters, Dorothy Porter, of South Bend Township, and Lois (Harold) Farster, of Kittanning; two brothers, Ernest (Marjorie) Anderson and Robert (Mary) Anderson, both of Spring Church; and numerous other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Seward, Clarence, William Merle and Lyle Anderson. Visitation will be held from 2:30 to 4:30 to 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday in the CURRAN-SHAFFER FUNERAL HOME, Apollo, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday with the Rev. Karen Lovelace officiating. Burial will be in South Bend Cemetery.
