Lewis was a tall man who cared greatly for his family. He married Eva Kennedy at age 17 in 1904. Since Eva lived in Arkansas and he in Oklahoma, they married at the state line. At the wedding, Lewis stood on the Oklahoma side, while Eva stood on the Arkansas one.

Lewis could read, a thing that was quite rare in that part of the country. He played harmonica, loved to make jokes, and talked to everyone, usually telling stories, an art that he was a master of. During his life, the existence of the automobile started, which he could never get. His grandchildren said that he was a horrible driver and no matter how he tried, he could not learn. He would always eat canned tomatoes with sugar for breakfast.

Lewis, like his son Clarence and grandson David, was an excellent father who cared dearly for his children. If one had a nightmare, he would rock them until they fell back to sleep. He was a very warm father which reflected upon his children.
