In Oct 1862 he entered in the Reg. 177 PA Militia and in Sept 1867 in the Reg. 198th PA Volunteers. He was in 3 great battles of the Civil War,Battle of Gettysburg, Battle of Wilderness and the surrender of appomatox. Four children, T.A., Charles, Mrs. nellie Holtom and Mrs Mary Harris survive him. "The Ness County Echo" was founded by Uncle Matt in 1892.
