Mrs. Closs was a homemaker. Born Aug. 13, 1931, in Fullerville, daughter of John Sr. and Louetta Lacey Backus, she went to school in the Fullerville area.
She married Charles W. Kelly on Jan. 25, 1950, in Gouverneur. Mr. Kelly died April 15, 1964. She married Lester Closs in June 1965. Mr. Closs died Dec. 4, 1981.
She served as lay minister for the Fullerville Community Church for more than 20 years and was a former member of E.J. Noble Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing the piano and guitar; especially country and gospel music.
Surviving are a daughter, Mavis Pyle, Nashua, N.H.; four sons, Robert and Stephen Kelly, both of Gouverneur, Charles Kelly, Wampsville, and Robert Closs, Hailesboro; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Thelma Chapin, Gouverneur, Marlene and Robert Quarry Jr., Gouverneur, and Mavis Cole, Fullerville; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Donald Backus, Hailesboro, and John Jr. and Barbara Backus, Gouverneur; seven grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
A son, Leroy Kelly, two brothers, Roland and Douglas Backus, a sister, Elaine Newcombe, a sister-in-law, Stasia Backus, and three brothers-in-law; Preston Morrissey, Merton Chapin, and Leo Cole, died before her.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Fullerville Community Church with the Rev. Orville Eacker officiating.
Spring burial will be in Fullerville Cemetery.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at French Funeral Home, Gouverneur.
