Lucille Dorothy Powers, 1917 - 2008
Claremore Community Leader and Hairdresser Dies
Lucille D. Powers, widow of Harry Powers, former long time political figure in Claremore, died Monday, December 15, 2008. Husband Harry, who died in February of this year, served Claremore as Mayor, Councilman, and City Clerk. Mrs. Powers served by assisting her husband, working as a cosmetologist, serving her church and the VFW Auxiliary.
Lucille Dorothy (Bakalyar) Powers was born January 7, 1917 into the Bakalyar Family of Lakefield, Minnesota. Lucille was one of 17 Bakalyar children. They lived on a farm on the outskirts of Lakefield, and attended school in the small town. As a young girl, Lucille loved her church and was confirmed at a very young age. In a large family such as Lucille's there was a division of labor, and Lucille worked as a seamstress. She made extra money for the family by doing other people's hair. Hairdressing became her passion and her skills in it were highly recognized. Her family nickname was "Luke."
After graduation from Lakefield High School in 1935, "Luke" went to Tulsa, Oklahoma to attend Beauty College. She worked as a hairdresser in Tulsa and shared an apartment with several girl friends. While working in Tulsa she met a young man named Harry Powers, from Claremore, Oklahoma who worked at the Meadow Gold Milk Plant. This meeting turned into a life long marriage when she and Harry were married on April 21, 1940.
Harry and Lucille had two sons, Jon Stephen Powers, and Don Marvin Powers, during the World War II years. While Harry was in the Navy, Lucille spent time in Rogers County and some time back home in Minnesota. After Harry's discharge from the Navy in 1946, they returned to Claremore, where Harry operated a Texaco Service Station at Fifth street and Historic Route 66. He and Lucille had two more children: a girl, Cynthia Gaye, and a boy, Marcus Harry.
Harry and Lucille were civic-minded individuals and were active in the Rogers County Democratic party, the VFW and Auxiliary, and Redeemer Lutheran Church. Lucille held offices in the VFW Auxiliary and served as Commander more than once. She also served in several capacities helping women's organizations in her church.
Lucille studied the chemistry of hair and the impact of various products on hair, to help provide better service to her patrons. This study took her to places like Las Vegas, Nevada and Hawaii, attending seminars on hair care. She worked with people like Jerry Redding of Redkin Laboratories and Vidal Sasson, the famous hairdresser. In 1958, Lucille opened her Shop at 420 E. 7th Street in Claremore and served her patrons from that location until the mid '90's. She was a licensed cosmetologist in Oklahoma for over sixty years.
She and husband Harry were active in helping the youth of Claremore. In the 1950's they sponsored Teen-Time dances for high schoolers at the VFW Hall, youth baseball teams, and various other activities.
Lucille and Harry were founding members of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Claremore, which started with a few couples meeting in each other's homes and a circuit-riding minister. Lucille and Harry gave time, money and effort to the church, and it grew as Claremore grew. Today their church has over one hundred members and a nice church complex at 220 North Seminole.
Her hairdressing ability along with the civic, political and church activities made Lucille Dorothy Powers a well-known name in Claremore. She would meet and greet people everywhere she went.
Lucille D. Powers lived 90 plus years and died Monday, December 15, 2008 in Claremore. Husband Harry preceded her in death on February 9, 2008. She is survived by her children: Jon Powers and wife, Jo, of Bailey, Colorado; Don Powers and wife, G. Kay, of Edmond, Oklahoma; Cynthia Gaye Powers, of Bellingham, Washington; and Marcus Harry Powers and wife, Linda, of Sheboygan, Wisconsin; ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, Harry's sister, Mable Bennett, of Claremore; three Nieces: Gail Mullen, Barbara Strickland and Donna Henson of Claremore.

A private family interment ceremony will be held following the services. Visitation will be Friday from 6 PM to 8 PM at Musgrove-Merriott-Smith Funeral Home 102 W. 5th Street, Claremore, Oklahoma.
