He was drafted in service Oct. 3, 1917 and immediately went to Camp Grant where he became a member of Company A, 59th Infantry. He shortly transferred from Camp Grant to Camp Green, North Carolina, where he remained in training until April 20, 1918, when he embarked for France by way of New York City.
Upon reaching France he was at once rushed to the battle line, and fought in the Chateau Thierry and Argonne Forest battles. It was in this latter battle that he received the wound that proved fatal a day or two later.
