Funeral services for Calvin booth will be held on Thursday, Nov 20, 2008 at noon in the Afton LDS Tabernacle.
A viewing will take place on Thursday from 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. prior to the funerals services at the church.
Calvin Douglas Booth, 82, of Afton passed away peacefully with his wife of 55 years at his side on November 16, 2008.
He was born in a little cabin west of Montpellier, Idaho to Douglas and Beatrice Hayes Booth and was the second child in a family with 10 children. He was born on November 15, 1926.
Cal attended school in a large rock building in Montpelier where the Oregon Trail Museum now stands. He had a happy childhood and was always a hard worker. Some of his first jobs included milking cows for 25 cents a day and working in a hay field for $1 a day.
When Cal was 15 his father passed away, so Cal quit school and went to work full time to help the family. He did what odd jobs he could find and when he turned 17 he went to work on the railroad section gang. It paid 63 cents an hour which was "big money" at that time.
Cal joined the Navy at age 18. He served in the Construction Battalion until 1946, seeing California, the Marshall and Caroline Islands and Okinawa. Upon his discharge he had water tender third class rating wich was a sergeant rating in the army.
In 1953 he met and fell in love with Ellen Sharleen Leavitt. They were married in Afton on June 14, 1953. They were later sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple on August 21, 1987.
Cal then had employment delivering milk in Shelley, Idaho. In 1955 the young couple moved back to Afton where Cal worked for Worthlin Ford in the parts department. He later oversaw the parts and service department until 1960.
Cal spent the next 15 years working for Courtesy Ford where he managed the parts department, the service department, and ran the wrecker. From 1965-1990 he worked for the Town of Afton, where he was in charge of the streets, parks and equipment. Because of health reasons, he retired in 1990 and in 1999 he worked as a courier for the Bank of Star Valley, a job which he really enjoyed.
Cal loved music all of his life. There was always music in his home as a child, and he passed his love of music on to his won grandchildren. Cal played the gritar and sang. He loved hearing a good fiddle rendition of "The Orange Blossom Special" and another beloved song was "Waltz Across Texas".Cal loved camping, hunting, and fishing with his family. He and Sharleen had a beautiful year which they enjoyed working in. He made delicious birthday cakes for his children and grandchildren. He served in the search and
Rescue, the Sheriff's Reserve, and was a licensed pilot. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was tenacious and endured well trough major back surgery, two massive heart attacks, an aneurysm, and prostate cancer.
Cal will be remembered as being generous good humored, quick witted, and loving. He loved well and was well loved. He was especially adored by his grandchildren.
