Enlisted, January 17, 1939, in Troop F, 101st Cavalry Regiment ( Squadron A ), NYNG in New York City. The 101st Cavalry was federalized, January 27, 1941, for what was to be one year of service. The Regiment was assigned to Fort Devens, MA, for training.

He was commissioned, 2nd Lieutenant, Field Artillery, and later promoted 1st Lieutenant and Captain. He was assigned to the 105th Field Artillery, 27th Division. The 27th Division was the first stateside division to respond to the attack, on Peat Harbor. The 27th Division departed from Fort McClellan, Alabama, December 14, 1941, for California for an anticipated attack from the Japanese.

He was deployed with the division, March 19, 1942, to Hawaii and served in Pacific operations. He was wounded in action and discharged from the service, July 21, 1946.
