Anna Eugenia McElhaney was the first child of James and Martha (Creelman) McElhaney. She was born August 23, 1868 in a covered wagon at a railroad camp some where in Nebraska. She had her mother's red hair. The family settled in Benton County, Arkansas. December 25, 1882 she married Sebrone G. Howery. (she was 17 years old....see letter he wrote to her father) The couple made the "Land Run" into Oklahoma Territory. Her three younger brothers joined her in Norman, Oklahoma. They were Jim, Charlie & Ben McElhaney. Later a younger half brother Harvey came to Norman from Arkansas. Anna had no child of her own, but adopted a girl named Josie. Also in her household noted though the census she cared for younger brother Harvey McElhaney (whose mother died when he was age 3) and niece Chloe McElhaney. Josie had two sons known as "The Smith boys'. Anna raised them too. She died September 3,1923 in Norman, Oklahoma. Her reputation was that she was the mainstay of the whole family group.
