Son of John & Elizabeth (Collins) Pickinpaugh. Husband to Nira Davis, and father to eight children: Naoma, Frances Ann, Leonard Izra., Anna, William Sylvester., Earl Leroy, Stella Oca, and Ethel Birdell Pickinpaugh.

Civil War veteran - In 1861, he enlisted in Capt. Bogle's (Independent) Infantry Co. of the Putnam County Missouri Home Guard. Then on March 17, 1862 at Unionville, he enlisted as a Private in Co. D, 1st Missouri State Militia Cavalry. He was later promoted to Sargeant.

His military records described him as: 5'11 3/4"; black hair; black eyes; and light complexion.
