"ISRAEL B. BAIR, FORMER LOCAL ENGINEER, DIES.
Word has been received of the death of Israel B. Bair, a former resident of Lancaster on Sunday, in the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. L. Welsh, 158 Egbert avenue. West New Brighton, Staten Island, N. Y., due to infirmities aged 77 years. He was elected engineer at the City Water Works in 1895, a position he held for many years. He was a member of George H. Thomas Post, G. A. R., Lancaster and of the Prince Edwin Lodge, No. 486, F. and A. M., Middleton. He is survived by his widow, one daughter, Mrs. Welsh, and one son, Adam, of New Jersey.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon on the arrival of the 2:18 P. M. P. R. R. train. Interment will be made in Woodward Hill cemetery."

"In 1860, he was a machinist presumably living somewhere in or near Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census. He stood 5' 10" tall and had dark hair and hazel eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he first enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg April 20, 1861, as a private Co. E, 10th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 31, 1861. He also enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg February 15, 1864, as a private with Co. I, 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pa). He was promoted to corporal February 21 and to sergeant July 20, 1864, and honorably discharged with his company July 8, 1865.
He married Pennsylvania-born Anna E. Miller and fathered Grace G. (b. 06/??/68), Maude (b. @1872), Irene Sophia (b. 07/23/76 - married Frank Adam Auxer), and Aldus F. (b. 11/??/78). In 1880, he lived with his family in Middletown, Dauphin County."
