ROCKPORT, Texas - Thomas Earl Griffith, 84, of Rockport, Texas, died Thursday, March 31, 2005, at his residence.
He was born in Spiro, Okla., October 16, 1920, the son of Thomas and Ethel Griffith. He attended Chanute Junior College. He entered the National Guard. When World War II was declared he was sent to Cold Bay, Alaska. He returned to Ft. Sill in Oklahoma where he became an officer in Field Artillery. Later he became a part of General George Patton's Army, which fought in Europe, earning numerous medals.
After the service he worked for a utility company, and served as resident engineer in Falfurrias and Aransas Pass, Texas. Later he became the first city manager of Aransas Pass and later was appointed county surveyor of Aransas County.
He was a past president of the Rotary Club, the Chamber of Commerce, board member and a president of ABC Learning Center, president of the Texas Surveyors Association of the Coastal Bend, and the advisory board of the Aransas County Airport. He supported the VFW and the Maritime Museum.
Survivors include his wife, Florence, of the home; one daughter, Gayle Garrett, Rockport; two sisters, Mary Lou Wilson and Sharon Shea, both of Chanute; and two brothers, Jerry Griffith and Dick Griffith, both of Humboldt. Four brothers preceded him in death.
Friends may call 1 - 9 p.m., Sunday, April 3, 2005, at Charlie Marshall Funeral Home. The family will receive friends 5 - 7 p.m.
Memorial Services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, April 4, at First Presbyterian Church, Rockport, led by the Rev. Charles Schuler. Graveside services at Rockport Cemetery will be private.
