MILLER, HERMAN J.
Herman J. Miller is one of Bellville's most influential businessmen and native sons, born on the 28th of April, 1865, to Herman Edward and Bertha (Langhammer) Miller, both of whom were born in Germany.
Herman J. Miller passed from the public schools of Bellville to the A. and M. College of Texas, where he graduated with the class of 1883 and with a degree in civil and mechanical engineering. He was but eighteen years of age at the time of his graduation. His father's death occurred shortly after this, and the young son assumed control of his extensive business interests and has continued them with ever increasing success and credit to the present time. He takes a commendable pride in his business affairs, and he has the distinction of being at the head of the oldest established business in Austin County. It was organized in 1852, and in its onward course passed triumphantly through the vicissitudes of the Civil war period, through the trying times which followed and through all the succeeding years without the impairment of its credit in one single instance. In politics a Democrat, Herman J. Miller has served as chairman of the Austin County Democratic Central Committee and as the president of the Bellville Independent School District Board. He is the vice president of the First National bank of Bellville.
In 1890 he was married to Louise Machemehl, a daughter of John H. Machemehl and of Charlotte, a daughter of Major Behne, who fought in the English army under the command of Wellington at the battle of Waterloo in 1812. Charlotte Behne was also a first cousin of ex-President McMahon of France. A daughter, Charlotte Louise, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Miller, and she is attending Monticello College. Mrs. Miller died in 1891, and in 1895 Mr. Miller married Miss Martha Henckel, a daughter of Charles Henckel, of Galveston. A son, Herman Edward, and three daughters, Helen, Lucile and Eleanor, have been born of this union. Mr. Miller is a member and the president of both the Sons of Herrmann and of the Bellville Turn Verein.
