Bobby, a native of Columbus, Mississippi, was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, class of 1957. He chose to be a naval aviator, and in 1960 was assigned to Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Squadron VS-26 aboard the aircraft carrier USS RANDOLPH. Tragically he was lost that year when the twin-engine S2F aircraft he was piloting stalled at low altitude and crashed into the Atlantic 300 miles off Cape Hatteras, N.C. He was survived by his wife Carolyn, son Stephen, and brother Earl Broome.
