John M. Smith
John M. Smith, for more than sixty years a citizen of Milam county, during the entire time making his home on the same farm a few miles northeast of Rockdale, died last Friday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Richard Esquival, and within a few hundred yards of where he had spent most of his life.
Mr. Smith was 85 years of age, and for the past four years had been afflicted with cancer of the head. The last four months of his life were spent in his bed, and his sufferings were terrible. Decedent was a Confederate veteran, and was also an ex-Texas Ranger, having seen service with the rangers prior to the war between the states. He entered the ranger service at the age of 13 years.
He came to Milam county about 60 years ago, and acquired a large tract of land, and followed the calling of a farmer and hog raiser for many years, and was active in the meetings and proceedings of the local camp of Confederate veterans, of which he was one of the very few remaining members.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, five daughters and three sons, as follows: Mrs. Maggie Fisher of Troup, Mrs. Ida Worley of Arkansas, Mrs. Ada Esquival and Miss Wren Smith of Rockdale, Mrs. L. C. Goss of Waco; the sons are Charles, Robert and R. K. Smith.
The funeral was held Saturday afternoon at the Sandy Creek church with interment following in the Sandy Creek cemetery, Rev. Sanders officiating.
