Bedford Hunter graduated from Junction City high school. Bedford enlisted into military service as a Non-Commissioned 49th US Vol Inf on, 30 Nov 1899 during the Spanish American War. His regiment sailed for the Philippines on the 6th of December 1899.

After the war he returned to the Philippines as a teacher in 1890. On the 15th of April 1907 he married Paz Montilla, the daughter of a wealthy Filipino man. The wedding ceremonies lasted two days and was attended by more than 500 people. Bedford already had a rice plantation and his new father-in-law presented him with a furnished bungalow making Bedford Hunter one of the big men in the province he lived in.
