Mrs. Susan Stroup, aged 44, mother of the deceased wife of S.H. McGary, youngest son of the editor of the Age, died at 20 minutes before 5 o'clock, Sunday morning, May 22nd, 1898, at the McGary residence in this town, and in the afternoon of the following day her remains were laid to rest beneath the shade of the trees in our beautiful burying ground. Deceased came to Wallisville three or four weeks ago, hoping that our balmy, bracing bay breezes would restore health; but the fell destroyer (consumption) claimed her - and her stay with us was brief. She came here a stranger to all save the family of the writer, but was soon made to feel that - in the good Samaritan sense - all were her neighbors, for all were sympathetic, kind and attentive; and all followed her remains sadly to their last resting place; and gentle hands placed sweet flowers on her grave. Mr. H.R. Wallis read the beautiful Methodist burial service and offered up an impressive prayer - and sweet, sad voices sung a requiem. She was a Christian woman - and lived a Christian life and died in the Christian faith - and her friends feel now the comforting assurance that she last rest in the boxom of her God. -Wallisville Age 25/5/1898
