There is also documentation in wife Mary Costa's Bible, in her handwriting, that supports "Alva" as his name. The name on his headstone is "Alvin".

Alva Monroe Files, Sr. and his first wife Lillie/Lilly had twins, Willie Files (1911 – 1992) and a daughter who died at birth. Lilly died soon after.

On August 17, 1922 Monroe & Mary Costa Bowerman Sanders married. They had five children:
