Betty Maria Olson Smith, 86, our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family early on the morning of February 13, 2009 of congestive heart failure.

Betty was born in Vernon, Utah on October 3, 1922 to John Ernest Olson and Harriet Cynthia Allred Olson, the second of five children.

She had a wonderful childhood growing up in Vernon, riding horses, herding sheep and running free with her brothers and sister. She graduated from Tooele High School and LDS Business College.

Music was a great blessing in her life. She loved to sing and sang in many choruses. She went to Israel and Egypt with the Oratorio Society and often commented "Imagine a little girl from Vernon sailing up the Nile." She married her eternal sweetheart Lyman E Smith on Nov. 2, 1942 in the Salt Lake Temple. They spent 58 years together before Lyman's passing in 2001.

Mother and Dad served three full time missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. They were Texas-Dallas, Florida-Tallahassee, Hawaii-Honolulu. They also served as stake missionaries in the Grant Stake. Mother loved the Lord with all of her heart and served faithfully in many church callings. Mom contracted polio when she was 22 years old. It never diminished her love or enthusiasm for life. However it did change what she could do. They are the parents of nine children, seven of whom are still living.

She is survived by her children: Lyman E. (Smitty) (Susan Fowler), L. Michael (Rae Ellen Miller), Kristie Blanchard (Bruce), Leslie Button (John), Kerry (Gail Moschini, divorced) (Gayle Hale, divorced), Marilee Beyer (Martin), Shannon Clarke (David) and son-in-law Devon Pearson (Diane Enger). She has 39 grandchildren and 78 great-grand-children with many more to come. She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, her daughter Betty Lynn Pearson and her son John Henry Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2009 in the Cameo Park LDS Chapel, 8909 South 1700 East, Sandy. There will be a viewing held prior to the services from 9:45-10:45 a.m. A viewing will also be held on Friday evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Cameo Park Chapel.
Interment: Vernon City Cemetery.
