Helen was a lifetime resident of Whiteside County. She married Leroy Frank Thummel on May 26, 1929. She was the mother of five children: Warren Leroy Thummel, Nancy Anne Swanson, Jane Audrey Giddings, Jacqueline Faye Brandau and Martha Mae Thummel (who died at birth).
Helen was an artist. She loved oil painting and worked on both canvas and china. She also loved weaving. Upon Leroy's retirement, the two traveled the globe.
