Jacob James Davis was the son of Jacob Davis and Mary Wheeler Humfreville. He married 1) Martha Ellen Brant in Tipton, Cedar County, Iowa on 4 December 1862 2) Mary Etta Tait on 18 April 1907 in Plankinton, Aurora County, South Dakota 3) Melissa A. Burnham on 26 June 1916 in Faith, Meade County, South Dakota. He served in the Civil War with the Union Army, enlisting as a Private in Davenport, Iowa on 31 March 1864 and served with Company A, 13th Regiment of Iowa Infantry Volunteers. He was taken prisoner during the Battle of Atlanta, Georgia on 22 July 1864 and was a prisoner at the Andersonville Prison for seven months. He was paroled on 28 February 1865 and was Honorably Discharged from the army on 21 July 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky.
