Services for Hazel Hancock, 87, of Morton will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in First Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Gordon Renshaw, pastor, and the Rev. Weldon Richardson, pastor of First Baptist Church in Gardendale, officiating.

Burial will be in Morton Memorial Cemetery under direction of Ellis Funeral Home.

Hancock died Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, at his residence.

He was born July 29, 1911, in Hancock. He married Eunice Richardson on Dec. 24, 1930, in Lovington, N.M. She died Dec. 24, 1989. He moved to Morton from Lamesa in January 1946. He was a member of First Missionary Baptist Church of Morton. He was a farmer and rancher. He also worked as a constable and a city marshal. He served on the Morton City Council, where he served as mayor pro-tem. He was a member of the Morton Fire Department and Morton Odd Fellow Lodge. He was named Morton Man of the Year in 1985. He served as Cochran County Sheriff until retiring. He also served as a county tax assessor/collector.

Survivors include three sons, Richard of El Paso, Herschel of Breckenridge and John of Morton; three daughters, Wanda Lemons of Monahans, Mayree Silhan of Morton and Melinda Angel of Lubbock; three sisters, Orene Holliday of Lamesa, Frances Scoggin of Shertz and Nancy Pruitt of Kingsland; two brothers, Mac W. Jr. of Farwell and W.L. of Roswell, N.M.; 15 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
