Virgil E. Harlan, 68, died at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008, at his home.

Born Jan. 21, 1940, in Alton, he was the son of Harold Albert Harlan and Virginia (Depper) Harlan Plumb.

He retired as a truck driver from Olin Corporation in February 2002, after 43 years of service. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the Alton Eagles F.O.E. 254.

On Sept. 8, 1990, in Godfrey, he married the former Myrlan R. Burney. She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters and their husbands, Teresa Fletcher and Tommy Garrett of Alton and Robin Floyd and Randy Dane of Tennessee; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Mark Harlan and Melody Govero of Wood River, John and Judy Harlan of Godfrey, David Harris of Richmond, Va., and Daniel and Connie Harris of Collinsville; 18 grandchildren, Mark Todd, Kerri and Laura Harlan, Amanda Mayfield, Gabby and Hana Harlan, Ashli and Zachary Short, Ronnie Leathers, Wendy Fletcher, John Belito, Tory and Joseph Brown, Cassandra Hart, Devin, Jeffery and Carrie Harris; 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers and their wives, Paul and Nadine Harlan of Godfrey and Russell and Carolyn Nicholson of Alton; a sister, Sharon Davis of Alton; a stepbrother, Alan Plumb; and a stepsister, Cora Francis.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his stepfather, Earl Plumb.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, at Gent Funeral Home in Alton.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 6, at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis.
