He was born June 13, 1922, at Hutchinson, Kansas, the son of Edward U. and Jessa Ireland Engler. A resident of Chula Vista, Calif., for a short time, formerly of Hutchinson, he was a former life insurance agent.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy, and later served in the U.S. Air Force. In 1983, he married Ernestina Ruiz, at Nogales, Calif. She survives.
Other survivors include: a daughter, Sherrie Joseph, San Diego; three step children; a sister, Alta Proctor; and five nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and his son Paul Takashi Engler.
The body will be cremated. Internment will be in Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego. Merkley Mitchell Mortuary, San Diego, is in charge of arrangements.
