Mr. Bernard was a lifelong resident of St. Joseph and the owner of Nate's Fashion Salon at 1702 Pacific for many years, where he was a cosmetologist.
Mr. Bernard was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, a graduate of Christian Brothers High School and had attended Northwest Missouri State University of Maryville, Mo.
In 1967, he married the former Karen Drennen. She survives of the home.
He was preceded in death by his father, Augustine Bernard; a sister, Angela Beers; and a brother Austin Bernard.
Additional survivors: 3 daughters, Monica A Bernard, Natasha B Bernard and Angela P Bernard, all of the home; a son Christopher N of the home; his mother, Maria Bernard of St. Joseph; nine sisters, Lisa McCartney, Julia Barnes, Virginia Blythe, Sadie Crail, all of St Joseph, Margaret Potter of Faucett, Mo., Lulu Young of Liberty, Mo.,Rosie Hecker of Huntington Beach, Calif.,Anna Bernard of Anaheim, Calif., and Paula Deets of West Point, N.Y., four brothers, Willie and Alex, both from St. Joseph, Raymond of Dekalb, Mo., and Hector of Glen Rock, Wyo.;and a grandchild of the home.
Burial: Mount Olivet cemetery.
