He served on navy gunboats in Chinese waters in the Asiatic Station in 1916-1917. On the eve of World War I, he transferred to destroyers in the Philippines. Upon the declaration of war against Germany in 1917, he was aboard the destroyers as they headed for Europe via Singapore, India, and the Suez Canal. For the duration of World War I, Davis de Treville served on anti-submarine duty in European waters.
Following the war he continued to serve mainly in destroyers in the Pacific Fleet based in California. In May 1924, Davis deTreville and Wilna R. McKee were married in Washington, D.C., and two years later their son, Davis II was born. From 1929 to 1932 Lieutenant Commander Davis served on the staff at Annapolis, followed by another tour in China. In July 1934 he returned to shore duty as Executive Officer of the U.S. Navy destroyer base in San Diego. In December 1938 he was promoted to Executive Officer of the USS Chester, but after serving a little over a month, he died on board the Chester at Mare Island on January 19, 1939 at the age of 50.
He was survived by his wife, Wilna McKee deTreville and his son, Davis deTreville II.
