Jackson entered army service as a substitute in Co. E, 38th Indiana Infantry on Nov. 10, 1864 - in time to participate in the final days of Sherman's March to the Sea and his subsequent Carolinas Campaign in 1865. Jackson also saw action in the last major land battle of the Civil War at Bentonville, N.C. on Mar. 19-21, 1865. He mustered out July 15, 1865 in Louisville, KY.

James applied for a federal pension on Apr. 10, 1877 (app. #233,820; cert. #396,944). He passed away 45 years later on Jan. 18, 1922 in Paris, IL and is buried in Edgar Cemetery, Edgar Co., IL. Jackson's wife Mary applied for a widow's pension on Jan. 27, 1922 (app. #1,190,122; cert #917,622 – Illinois).
