He was born in Ohio and came to California in July 1902.
He was killed in action at 8 a.m. on Hill 255 in the Argonne Forest by shrapnel from a shell.
While at the front buglers and other musicians were put into service as stretcher carriers carrying the wounded from the field of battle to the field hospitals.
