Lawrence (Larry) William Almy

Citrus Springs, FL - God's faithful servant, Lawrence William Almy, was taken to his eternal home on February 13, 2009. He is predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth Agnes Almy, his daughter, Helen Regina Almy, his parents Arnold William and Regina Margaret Almy of Hillcrest, NY, his brothers David Almy of Port Crane, NY, Paul Almy of Fort Collins, CO, his sisters, Mary Louise McGlynn of Kissimmee, FL, and Catherine Almy of Binghamton, NY.

He will be missed by his children Mary Elizabeth Cote of Newark, DE, David Lawrence of Hopkinton, MA, Michael William of Binghamton, NY, and Thomas Jerome of Leesburg, FL, and by his grandchildren Christopher (Son of Thomas), Jessica, Kevin (Children of David), Amy, Sharon, Angela, Joseph (Children of Thomas), and Nicholas (Son of Michael). He will also be missed by his seven great-grandchildren, Zachary, Meggan, Gavyn, Madeleine, Jadon, Billy, and Kimber Lynn. Lawrence leaves behind his sisters Rita Holtslander and Ruth Jump both of Port Crane, NY, Jean Miles of Citrus Springs, FL, Leona Booth of Yucaipa, CA, and Joanne Mandic of Dunellen, FL.

Lawrence was born in Binghamton, NY, in December, 1917. He grew up in Hillerest, NY, where he was one of the first altar boys of St. Catherine Church. He married Elizabeth on May 19, 1941, and they lived for many years in Port Crane, NY, and Harpursville NY. During this time, Lawrence was an active member of St. Joseph's Parish in Sanitaria Springs, NY, serving as a Trustee for many years and being a member of the Knights of Columbus. He worked for forty-two years as a Design Engineer with Link Aviation (Singer, Inc.). He loved his work and during that time, he went on numerous business trips. Larry and Betty moved to Citrus Springs, FL, where they enjoyed being part of the praying community of St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton parish. A year after the death of Betty, Larry lived at The Grand Court in Tavares, FL. For the last four months, he lived at Hillside Center in Wilmington, DE. From the time he was a teenager, he loved kayaking in the Binghamton, New York area, and became well-known for his love of boating. He and his best friend, Harold Griffin, built a 17' sailboat in Lawrence's home garage, bending the planks and band planing the mast. After sailing for many years on Lake Cayuga and the St. Lawrence River, that boat was followed by three others. He shared his love with others through his work in the Power Squadron.

A Mass of Resurrection will be offered on Tues. Feb. 17, 2009 at St. Joseph's Church, Sanitaria Springs. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Johnson City, NY. The family will receive friends at the Osterhoudt-Madden Funeral Home 69-71 Maple Street Harpursville on Mon. Feb. 16, 2009 from 5 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph's Parish or St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish.
