Walter was ordained as a Deacon at Rankin Chapel Baptist church in 1963 along with Billie Watson and Dave 'Deager' Blake. Walter was later a Deacon and leader at Mount Teman Baptist Church for at least 43 years until his death. He was totally devoted to his church and family.
As for his military record he enlisted in the US Army, June 26, 1942 in Cincinnati, Ohio. (he was there working as a painter with a construction company)
He was in 226th Signal Operation Company, TSMG Expert. According to his discharge papers he was stationed at Tunisia; Rome-Arno; Rhineland; Southern France; Central Europe and Africa. He was Honorably discharged August 30, 1945.
