Mr. Carroll Livingston Brown, age 81, of 102 Canebrake Drive, Anderson, SC went home to be with his Lord on Saturday, February 14, 2009.Carroll was a graduate of Clemson University. He was the Assistant Anderson County Superintendent of Education from 1959 until 1963, then becoming Superintendent serving until 1972. He then completed his service to the State of South Carolina by working as the School Bus Supervisor of nine counties until his retirement in 1992. He was an employee of the South Carolina State Department of Education for a total of thirty-six years. He was a member of the S.C. Education Association, National Education Association, Anderson County Education Association, and the S.C. Association of County Superintendents. He served on the Boards of the Clemson Area Continuing Education Center and the Anderson/Oconee Speech and Hearing Services, also serving as their Treasurer. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during the Korean War.Carroll was a lifelong member of Concord Baptist Church. All who knew him there will sorely miss him. He served his church in many capacities. He was chosen at age 22 to complete the term of Deacon following the death of his father, Robert C. Brown, and continued to serve as Deacon many terms throughout the years. Loving to study the Bible, he also taught in the Don Latham Sunday School Class until his illness prevented him this past year. He served as a Training Union Director, Superintendent of Sunday School, Director of the Men's Brotherhood, and Church Treasurer. He sang in the Sanctuary Choir from age 14 having developed a love of music from his mother, Kate Steedley Brown, who served as the church pianist for many years.He leaves behind those to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 57 years, Nellie Welborn Brown; daughter, Peggy Brown Purdy and her husband Tommy of Anderson, SC; granddaughter, Jamie Purdy Hamrick and her husband Cameron Travis of Marietta, GA; grandson, Christopher Thomas Purdy and his wife Lindsey Havalla of Iva, SC. Carroll also leaves a brother, Robert Brown and his wife Betty of Oswego, IL, Edwin Brown and his wife Annie Ruth of Greenwood, SC, and Rev. Melvin Brown and his wife Wanda also of Greenwood, SC. In addition, June Brown, wife of his deceased brother, Daniel Brown; Beth Brown, wife of his deceased brother Hubert Brown, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother Allison Brown.The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at 2:00pm at Concord Baptist Church with the Reverend Bob Marcaurelle, Reverend Dr. Don R. Cox and Reverend Melvin Brown officiating. The Don Latham Sunday School Class members will serve as the Honorary Escort. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home on Monday, February 16, 2009 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm. The family will be at the home of his daughter, 211 Sweet Gum Trail, Anderson, SC.Flowers are optional.
