She was born May 25, 1911, in Painsedale, Mich., to Isaac and Sophia Tapanie. She grew up in Brule. She married Frank Gustafson in 1933 and moved to the Brantwood area where they spent their lives farming and logging. She enjoyed baking bread, going out to dinner, reading, spending time outdoors and making root beer. Her great-grandchildren called her "Grandma Root Beer."
She is survived by five sons, Willard (Sandy), Tripoli; Donald (Judy); Harvey; and Milton (Patricia), all of Brantwood; and Bill (Linda), Waukesha; by 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; by one sister Isabel Thomas, Salt Lake City, Utah; and by one sister-in-law Viola Tapanie, Oulu.
She was preceded in death by her parents, by her husband Frank in 1978; by four brothers, five sisters and one daughter-in-law.
Funeral services were held March 18 at Krueger & Sons Funeral Home in Tomahawk with Rev. Duane Jalas officiating. Burial will be in the spring at Clifford Finnish Cemetery.
