Charles Renfrow Newsom, 81, died Friday, February 13, 2009 in Charlotte, NC.

Charlie was born on April 18, 1927, the son of the late Joseph Martin Newsom and the late Ellen Renfrow Newsom of Raleigh.

A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 1623 Carmel Road, Charlotte, NC on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at 4:00 p.m., followed by inurnment in the church columbarium. The family will receive friends after the service.

After graduation from Broughton High School in 1945, he served in the U.S. Army, and in 1950 received a B.S. degree in textiles from North Carolina State University. He was employed by J. P. Stevens at Slater, NC, Stanley, NC, and Great Falls, SC; by American Bemberg, Chemstrand, Allied Chemical, Belding Chemical, and Westinghouse before becoming a manufacturer's representative in Charlotte. He was very instrumental in the use of paperthreads woven into natural cane patterns utilized by the furniture industry in the state. He held several patents. As a communicant of St. John's for 44 years, he was the leader of a church usher group for many years. He was also a member of the Old Raleigh Boys.

He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jeanne Newsom Lawson and Bradley Lawson and their children, Alex, Russell, and Dennis of Raleigh; a son and daughter-in-law, Ed and Donna Newsom and their children, Bryan and Tyler, of Wake Forest; and a son and daughter-in-law, Lee and Lori Newsom, and their children, Kate, Anne, and Mary Hannah, of Charlotte.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church, 1623 Carmel Road, Charlotte, NC 28226 or to Habitat for Humanity, Attn: Donations, P.O. Box 220287, Charlotte, NC 28222.

Harry and Bryant Company is serving the family of Mr. Newsom.
