Sam Millsaps Jr., 85, of Athens, died Monday, Feb. 9, 2009, at NHC Health Care of Athens.
A native of Rhea County, and a resident of McMinn County for most of his life, he was a son of the late Sam B. Millsaps Sr. and Mary Pelphry Millsaps. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Maudine Howell and Edith Bowles; and six brothers, Johnny Millsaps, Darvin Millsaps, Hamp Millsaps, Claude Millsaps, Hayward Millsaps and James Millsaps. He was retired from Thomas & Betts and was an employee of the K-25 Plant in Oak Ridge for 25 years. He was active in 4-H Programs in McMinn County and was a member of Pond Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Lou Alice Henderson Millsaps of Athens; four sons, David Millsaps, Ross Millsaps and Alvin Millsaps, all of Niota, and Jerry Millsaps of Athens; three daughters, Eva Jean Hicks of Athens, Jeanette Rowland of Etowah, and Debbie Elsea of Riceville; one sister, Reba McCullough of Rockwood; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Randy Maddox and the Rev. Mike Bernard officiating. Burial will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in McMinn Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Billy Millsaps, Randall Millsaps, Joshua Millsaps, Corey Gard, Glenn Mashburn and Richard Wallace.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
