CO. F. ("Meredith's Guards") 19th Indiana Infantry. Cottman was a 2nd Lt. when mustered in July 1861. He was listed as a tailor from Indianapolis, Indiana. The Iron Brigade earned its nickname as "men who stood like iron" and it had the highest casualty rate of any Union brigade in the Civil War.
