Florence Mae Martin Carey, 80, of Mesa, Ariz., and formerly of Peoria, Ill., passed away Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, in Mesa, Ariz.

Florence was born with her twin brother, Thomas Edward Patterson, on Sept. 23, 1928, in Peoria, Ill. She was the daughter of John Alexander and Julia Mae Boles Patterson. She married Eugene Ray Martin in Peoria, Ill., on Aug. 17, 1946. He preceded her in death May 2, 1987. She remarried Gerald Gene Carey in Lake Tahoe, Nev., on May 23, 1995. He preceded her in death Oct. 4th, 2008.

She also was preceded in death by her two brothers, Thomas Edward Patterson and Robert Patterson.

Surviving are three sisters, Anna Cundiff of Peoria, Ill., Vi (Bob) Arnett of Florida, and Barbra Jean (Jack) Schlichsup of Peoria, Ill. Also surviving are her four children, Bonnie (Bill) Howell of Erie, Ill., Ralph (Pamela) Martin of Washington, Ill., Thomas (Michela) Martin of Phoenix, Ariz., and Deborah (Mitch) Opie of Mesa, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

Florence was a member of the AMVET'S in Peoria, Ill., in Citrus Gardens Mobile Home Community. She also was involved in Lion's Club, Red-Hats, Country Store, Bible studies and "Water Babies" Water Aerobics. She was very active in the community in Peoria, Ill., and Mesa, Ariz.

She worked as a car-hop as a teenager for Steak 'N Shake Restaurants and Alcove Restaurant in Peoria, Ill. In Arizona, she worked as a waitress at numerous restaurants including the Arizona Biltmore and Lakes Club. She also worked as a cook for Motorola before retiring.

She loved spending time with her family, cooking, entertaining, sewing, baking, cleaning and helping others. She also enjoyed the company of her dogs, Barney and Buddy.

Florence will be deeply missed by her family and friends. May our Heavenly Father keep her and bless her in eternity till we meet again.

Graveside services for Florence will be held at Roberts Cemetery in Morton, Ill.
