Henry was the son of Henry and Sarah Jane (nee Heim) who emigrated to New Zealand from London on the SAMARANG in July 1852.

Henry was the 3rd of their 15 children, all born in Canterbury, New Zealand.
He married Mary Alice Maru and hd 10 children.

He died 36 years before her and they are buried beside each other in Ashhurst.
