Elizabeth was the 11th of 18 children to John Hooper of Horsington, England.
His 1st wife (with whom he had 5 children) died in England in 1838 - his 2nd wife, Caroline Wadman was Elizabeth's mother.
Her parents emigrated to New Zealand in 1841 on the ARAB.

Elizabeth married George Hirst, son of Sydney Hirst who built the Christ Church at Taita in 1853, and they had 11 children, mostly in the Manawatu where they were farming.

She died aged 74, 15 years after him.
