He arrived in Round Valley, Mendocino County on August 15, 1884 where he secured 80 acres of land. This land was purchased from him in 1891 for the Covelo Indian Reservation and he subsequently bought another farm and added acreage to it finally reaching 963 acres in all. He served for nearly 7 years as deputy United States Marshal for the Northern District of California.

Charlie Hurt was known to smoke big stogies. One day he and a friend were riding in a buggy pulled by a high spirited horse and were making their way down Howard Street in Covelo. The horse got spooked and started to run away. While his friend was trying to get the horse under control, Charlie, with stogie firmly clamped in his jaws said "If you don't get this horse under control, the best man and the worst man in Covelo are going to get themselves killed today".
