Anthony (Tony) T. Azzato, 95, of Southport died Monday, February 9, 2009, at his residence.
Mr. Azzato was born in Italy on December 16, 1913, and was the son of the late Giovani and Carmella Pasquarialo Azzato. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Helen.
Mr. Azzato was graduated from St. Joseph's College in Philadelphia, Pa., with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry. He was a manager with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in South Philadelphia until his retirement. He enjoyed and excelled in sports. He was a lifeguard. He played tackle for the semi-pro championship football team Passyunk Square. He won the light-heavyweight Golden Gloves boxing championship. He won the AAV Middle Atlantic Doubles Handball championship in the mid 1950s.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend.
He is survived by his daughter, Maryann Azzato; his son, John (Bud) Azzato and wife Maryann. He will be missed by his grandchildren, Elena Page, Gabriel Azzato, Rebecca Charlap and Amanda Charlap.
A funeral service was held Thursday, February 12, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev. Trent Watts officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Columbarium.
