By Eva J. Bishop Leonard - I was born at Arkwright, SC in 1899, Spartanburg County. I lived at Clinton and Ninety-Six, SC earlier and at Laurens (Watt Mill). We moved to Lexington, NC in 1915 when Thelma was six weeks old. I was 14 yrs old then. Lived across the road from chair plant for several years and moved to Center St.and lived there for a while, then moved to Erlanger, NC for about 20 years. But why living on Center St. I went to school at Churchland, NC school and there I met Charles Ervin , Leonard and married him in January 24, 1920. Wilma was born at Churchland, NC in December 15, 1920. Then went to Erlanger when she was about 9 months old down near the railroad station. Moved to the playhouse and Hoyle and Howard and Marylee were born. Moved back to Churchland and had a house built and moved in just before Lewis was born. We moved to Ruffin, NC and then to Oxford, NC where Don was born and then back to Erlanger where Jim was born. Hoyle was about 5 years old and I whipped him for stealing a box of cracker jacks when we lived at Ruffin, NC from Mrs. Hooper that ran the store. She was having dinner with me and Hoyle slipped out the back door and went into the store. Howard developed polio when he was 9 months old (1925). Dr. Sowers in Lexington, NC was the one that advised us to carry him to Salisbury, NC to the doctor. The doctor said he may walk and maybe not walk. We carried him back to Churchland and Viola was sitting in the grass and a bucket of water was nearby. She asked Howard to bring her a dipper of water and he taken a few steps with the water and began to improve as the days went by.
At Arkwright, SC my Uncle Jonah was a brakeman on the train that ran from Spartanburg, SC on down to Roebuck, SC, Moores, Switzer, Enoree on down the line. Lots of times, Uncle Jonah would stop at the crossing at Arkwright and pick me up and carry me to Switzer where Grandpa and Grandma Castleberry lived. Grandpa would pick me up and carry me to the farm they owned and I would spend lots of summers there.
I went to school in Asheville, NC while we lived in Arkwright, SC about 1 1/2 years just before we moved to Lexington, NC. I would catch the train in Spartanburg and get off at the Biltmore Train Station. I could see the Biltmore house from the train station in Asheville, NC.
