Elizabeth Jane "Midge" Kampney, 89, of 5509 River St., died Tuesday morning February 10, 2009 at Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility, where she had resided since November.
Mrs. Kampney was a cook and waitress for many years in Carthage and Lowville. She later cared for more than 35 children in her home for many years.
Born April 13, 1919, at Long Pond, Croghan, daughter of Benjamin and Cecilia Carrier Dicob, she attended rural school in Dicob's Corners. From age 15, she helped raise her siblings after her mother's death.
She married Edward E. Wilder on May 12, 1937, in Philadelphia. The marriage ended in divorce. She married Clarence H. "Chris" Kampney on Dec. 21, 1949, at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, Croghan, with the Rev. Amadeus Burke officiating. The couple resided on Number Four Road for many years. Mr. Kampney died Dec. 18, 1989. Mrs. Kampney moved to Valley View Courts in November 1990.
She was an active member of St. Peter's Catholic Church parish and was a former member of many Catholic organizations where she volunteered.
Surviving are two sons and their wives, James E. and Annie Wilder, Savannah, Tenn., and Donald B. and Nancy Wilder, Elizabethton, Tenn., and Watson; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Donna J. Wilder Adams, Raleigh, N.C., Christina Kampney Monnat and Paul Monnat, Lowville, and Sheila A. Kampney Roggie and Galen Roggie, Croghan; two stepdaughters, Patricia G. Kampney Bush, Deer River, and Joyce V. Kampney Ward, Raleigh, N.C.; a son-in-law, Glenn Buckingham, Beaver Falls; four brothers and two sisters-in-law, Paul and Frances Dicob, Lowville, Robert Dicob, Vero Beach, Fla., Gilbert and Rosemary Dicob, Glendale, Ariz., and Richard Dicob, Watertown; a sister, Patricia Hickox, Carthage; 22 grandchildren, 29 great- and great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Twin sons, Robert James and Rodney Joseph, died shortly after birth in January 1959. A stepdaughter, Sharon A. Kampney Buckingham, died in January 2000; a brother, Donald Dicob, died in November 1977, and a sister, Mary Lucille Dicob, died at birth. Grandchildren also died before her.
A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Peter's Catholic Church with the Rev. Timothy J. Soucy, pastor, officiating. Spring burial will be in St. Stephen's Catholic Cemetery, Croghan.
