Fred Austin Hendricks was a Gypsy at heart. He loved to travel. Before he died on 4 August 1995. Fred got to all 50 states in the USA plus Canada. Hawaii was the last state he visited right before his death. During his life he had several 'careers'. He was a farmer, so he followed the crops to various locations and worked as a farm laboror. He also had his own farming business for awhile. Fred also drove a truck. This occupation also took him to many different states. While away from his birth place in NC, he sent back numerous postcards and letters to his wife, Sally Belle Brandon. On many occasions his wife, Sally and only son Graham Harley accompanied him on his travels. They farmed in Florida, Conn, and NC. Fred had inheritated the family farm on Shannon Bradley Road, Gastonia, NC from his father, Hunter, and he and his family lived there for many years. His brothers and sister sold their part of the inherited land all around the farm and housing developements were built around them. After Fred retired, he and Sally began to spend the winters at their house in Leisure City, Fl. After several years of break-ins at their home on Shannon Bradley Road while they were in Florida, they decided to sell the farm and move into a house they owned in the Love Heights area of Gastonia. They had been renting this house out up until then. Fred also sold his house in Florida. Fred lived in the Love Heights house until his death.
