Bertha Irene Bell, of 107 Elliot Street, Brattleboro, died Friday, July 4, 2003, at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Bell was born in Greenfield, Mass., on December 8, 1919, the daughter of Alfred Barry and Sadie Thrasher.She was raised in Brattleboro where she attended Academy School and graduated from Brattleboro High School, Class of 1939. Mrs. Bell was employed at the Brattleboro Retreat in the kitchen. She later worked for the Book Press Bindery for thirty years. She was a life member of the VFW Auxiliary Carl Dessaint Post #1034, the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary and the American Legion Post #5 Auxiliary. Mrs. Bell enjoyed dancing, bingo, hooking rugs and time spent with her family and friends. On November 18, 1939, she was married to Kenneth Alfred Bell. Her husband of sixty years passed away on November 15, 1999. She leaves one daughter, Judith Williams of Brattleboro; a brother, Harold (Jeff) Barry of West Brattleboro; seven grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren and one great great grandson, and many nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her sons, Ronald Kenneth Bell and Clayton Alfred Bell; her sister, Viola Barry Pratt, all of Brattleboro, At her request, Eternal Flame will handle the cremation. There will be a graveside service at 10 a.m., Thursday, July 10, 2003, at the Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery, Brattleboro, with the Rev. Dennis Roth. Memorial contributions may be made to Rescue Inc., of Brattleboro.
