Oddie Lee "Smitty" Smith, 76, died surrounded by his family, Saturday, February 7, 2009, at Vista Care Hospice in Lubbock, Texas. Smitty was born May 31, 1932, to Otis Young and Lora Lee (Burns) Smith in Elida, New Mexico. As per his wishes, his body was donated to the Texas Tech School of Medicine. His ashes will be buried in the Elida Cemetery at a later date. Memorial services will be held at 7:00 PM, Tuesday, February 10, 2009, at The Chapel with Cecil Bunch officiating.
Oddie quit school in the eighth grade to work on the family farm. He married Paula Sue Arnold October 2, 1951, in Clovis, New Mexico. They had celebrated 57 years of marriage. He was a member of the West 21st Street Church of Christ and was an avid fisherman. Oddie always felt the need to help people and often took food to the elderly and to the children's home. He retired as the manager of Farmers Co-Op grain elevator where he worked for 24 years.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Bobby Lee Smith; his parents; two brothers, Edward Wesley Smith and E.T. Smith; and one grandson, James Lee Brazell.
Oddie is survived by his wife, Paula Sue of the home in Clovis; one son, Jimmy Herschel Smith of Amarillo, Texas; four daughters, Julia Deane Smith of Lubbock, Texas, Mary Charlene Brazell (Shain McKay) of Albuquerque, Melinda Ann Smith and Pamela Schwartz both of Amarillo, Texas; three grandchildren, Eric Young Brazell, Oddie Lee "Casey" Smith, Jr. and Jeremy Keith Smith; six great-grandchildren, Sarah Nichole Aldrich, Samantha Padilla, James Roger Brazell, Vera Brazell, Steven Smith and Sky Lynn Smith; two nieces, Lynn Fogleman and Debbie Lucas; his extended adopted family; cousins and friends, and his faithful companion "Missy".
