Inscription
In memory of Lieut. William B. Lyne of the U.S. Navy who fell from the U.S. ship Pennsylvania in the harbor of Norfolk on the night of the 29th of April 1841 and was drowned in the 36 year of his age. In all the relations of life Lieut. Lyne, was irreproachable. His ardent and high virtues will time secured for him universal regard. Inspelled by the admiration of his character the Petty officers & seamen of the U.S. ship Pennsylvania and the citizens of Portsmouth mingled their tears at his grave and erected this monument to his memory.
